Who uses
Biodiesel?
Many industries use Biodiesel because it is an easy
way to reduce their “carbon footprint”,
or the amount of carbon consumed by their routine actions.
Also, since biodiesel has lubrication properties that
are superior to petroleum diesel, some industries use
biodiesel to extend engine life. Finally, since biodiesel
emissions do not contain soot, some prefer biodiesel
in areas where air quality is important (e.g. cities,
construction sites, mining). Current industries using
Biodiesel include: Delivery companies, excavation and
mining companies, school and municipal transportation,
railway and OTR freight, agriculture, construction,
and marine transportation and freight.
Is Biodiesel approved for use
by the EPA?
Biodiesel is registered as a fuel and fuel additive
with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and meets
clean diesel standards established by the California
Air Resources Board (CARB). Neat (100 percent) Biodiesel
has been designated as an alternative fuel by the Department
of Energy (DOE) and the US Department of Transportation
(DOT).
Is Biodiesel safer than petroleum
diesel?
Scientific research confirms that Biodiesel exhaust
has a less harmful impact on human health than petroleum
diesel fuel. Biodiesel emissions have decreased levels
of hydrocarbons and nitrited compounds that have been
identified as potential cancer causing compounds.
How does Biodiesel affect my
miles per gallon?
Biodiesel produces similar torque and horsepower to
petroleum diesel. The 1998 DOE and USDA Biodiesel Lifecycle
Inventory Study showed that Biodiesel fuel economy is
similar, with Biodiesel fuel efficiency only 2-3% less
than petroleum diesel. By comparison, E85 ethanol has
a 25% drop in fuel efficiency compared to petroleum
gasoline.
How do I tell how much Biodiesel
is in the blend I buy at the gas station?
Biodiesel is commonly blended with petroleum diesel.
When a blend is used, the fuel station must state the
blend percentage. This is expressed as “B”
for “Biodiesel” and then the percentage
of Biodiesel that’s in the blend. A “B20”
blend means that Biodiesel comprises 20 percent by volume,
with petroleum diesel 80 percent.
Can I start my own Biodiesel
production facility?
Yes. Contact Imerjent today at 503-682-0212 to learn
